Exploring and new methods

Over the 4 weeks of the exploration festival, we worked with various methods like; Harman fan and multiverse thinking to brainstorm ideas using the CERN technologies. We learned how to integrate CERN technologies with our opportunity cards, and we produced ideas that use CERN tech to create a sustainable solution. The ideation phase was more around speculated future, using current data collected from secondary sources. As a team, we gained more ideas and different perspectives during the cross-collaboration with the NYC Team from Pace University.  These 4 weeks helped us learn different frameworks that can help us rapidly ideate and create prototypes.  One of the other things we learned was time-boxing while generating ideas, within 5 to 10 minutes for brainstorming fruitful ideas. We learned collaboration skills and how to start researching from a technology standpoint, over the user-centered design perspective. Starting ideation and exploring possible forced to think differently about; how would the end-users benefit from this solution and what value does it bring to the greater community.

Our future thinking ideation

Rich insights

We chose one to two opportunity cards each week that covered various issues within Melbourne, Victoria and integrated them with suitable CERN technologies. The different issues within the city of Melbourne that we explored within the four-week festival were dooring (cyclists getting hit by a car door opened by the car driver), increased CO2 emissions, the impact of bushfires, population growth, urban sprawl, increased demand for food supplies. After choosing some of the opportunity cards, we incorporated CERN technologies like the TIM (Train Inspection Monorail), flame detector, C2MON and Integrated cooling system. We also understood that we can take features or functions from the CERN tech and integrate them with our ideas. Most of the ideas that we brainstormed were proposed for the future of 2030. The scenarios we speculated were more around issues with climate change, pollution, and natural disaster safety measures. Taking the top two issues; bushfires and agriculture, we created our first prototypes and pitch to work on during phase 2.

Our learnings

Opportunities or issues we explored were more around environmental protection and conservation in greater Victoria. We learned that the predicted Victorian population for 2030 is 8.4 million and the Victorian Government is aiming for zero carbon emissions by 2030. However, given the energy current consumption rate and population growth, the Co2 emission levels are bound to skyrocket by 2030 aggravating climate change and hamper the healthy and safe lifestyle of the Victorian population. Hence, we created the Helios and the Amigos system to help address both bushfires and agricultural issues in the future. After our presentation, we learned from the feedback that we need to consider some technical aspects like; “Is it possible to integrate Amigos within 80-floor high-rise buildings?”, “Will everyone have enough space to incorporate the kitchen garden in their balconies” and “Is it possible to send out alert signals through communication from Helios to CFA during bushfires?”

The fun stuff

The exploration festival was quite engaging and fun. Warm-up session to push our creative thinking is something we enjoy. During week 3 we were given an activity to rapidly draw an alien form to tell a story. This activity helped us think about the creative outcomes that could become our reality in the future and was particularly enjoyable to listen to other people’s ideas and stories.  We enjoyed the weekly scavenger hunt and created the team member’s names with household objects and did a rapid portrait of each other to keep the process
fun.

Next steps

We will take the feedback and comments received for our Phase 1 presentation and work on it for Phase 2 (further design development). We will also study the CERN technologies in more depth with the help of experts and CERN coaches. After group discussions,we will choose one idea/ concept to work on for Phase 2. We will work on Phase 1 white paper documentation.
